Some travelers prefer to dine at restaurants outside of the resorts and purchase meals and drinks as they go. There are a variety of resorts in the Cancun and Riviera Maya area that cater to these travelers and offer a few different options:
European Meal Plan
A European Meal Plan, sometimes abbreviated as EP, indicates that the price is strictly for the hotel or resort stay and airfare and does not include any meals and drinks. All food provided by the hotel is billed separately and taxes and tips are usually additional as well.
Some hotels offer guests the option of being on the American Plan, a Modified American Plan, or the European Plan. The advantage of the European Plan is that guests have more options to try a variety of restaurant experiences, and can often save money by eating out at restaurants that charge less than the hotel dining room.
American Meal Plan
The American Meal Plan, sometimes abbreviated as AP, means that the price we provide includes three meals a day, for example breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the American plan, the meals are provided by the hotel dining room.
Some hotels offer guests the option of being on the American plan or paying a la carte for food consumed in their facility. Vacationers choosing a hotel in a remote location where there are not many restaurants (and All-Inclusive is not an option) should stay at a hotel that offers an American plan. Typically you will not find many resorts in Cancun or the Riviera Maya with this option.
Modified American Meal Plan
The Modified American Plan, sometimes abbreviated as MAP, means that the price we provide includes two meals a day, including breakfast and either lunch or dinner. In the Modified American plan, these meals are provided by the hotel dining room.
Similar to the American Plan, if you are staying at a resort that is remote or offers little or no restaurants, the minimum package you will need is the Modified American Meal Plan. |
